Principal’s Message:

It continues to be busy here at RIS as winter rolls along. We had a successful H1N1 clinic for under 10 year olds on January 12. The Health Dept. continues to be impressed with our children’s behavior during the clinics. DinoMan entertained our students on January 9th with his study of dinosaurs using humor with this interactive presentation. The SlapStick Scientist will be here on February 12th for another presentation. These are great PTC sponsored events that help bring science alive for our students.
As the school moves forward with the development of a Standards Based Report card, we will be informing parents of our progress in this endeavor on an ongoing basis. The Report Card team knows that for some parents this is a very different system than what we grew up with as children ourselves. Standards Based report cards are a much more accurate way of determining a child’s academic progress.
The Knights of Columbus have their Free Throw Championships for boys and girls (ages 10-14) on January 31st. Please contact Lou Wierzbicki at 747-6313 for more information.
With the recent events in Haiti, we will have next Wednesday, January 27th, a “Hats for Haiti” day. Students and staff can wear a hat during school for a donation of a $1.00.

Jay Slenker is in his seventeenth year in the Rutland City Public School district. He has been a substitute teacher, paraeducator, Special Educator, classroom teacher, and Department Head. During this time as a classroom teacher, he developed a Psychology and Advanced Placement Psychology program for Rutland High School. He is in his third year as Assistant Principal of Rutland Intermediate School. Jay completed his undergraduate work at Utica College of Syracuse University and has earned a Masters degree in Special Education and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in School Administration from Castleton State College.

Mr. Slenker enjoys cycling, coaching lacrosse, Nordic and alpine skiing, and hunting in his spare time. He has two elementary age children and his wife also works in an elementary school as an Occupational Therapist. Rutland City Public Schools has been a great place to work all of these years.

Jessica recently joined the administrative team at RIS.  Prior to becoming an assistant principal, she served as the district’s Residential School Case Manager and Independent School Service Provider.  She served as a Special Educator at Rutland Middle School for eleven years and a Special Educator at SUCCESS for two years.
Jess is a Rutland native.  She earned her BA in Psychology at Castleton State College and her MA in Educational Leadership through the Woodruff Institute at Castleton State College.  She resides in Rutland with her husband and three children.

Ms. Farman joined Rutland Intermediate School as a Technology Instructor in 2006. Prior to joining RIS, she was a classroom teacher and spent some time as a corporate trainer.  Cathy is a National Board Certified Teacher and holds an Intel Master Teacher Certification in technology.  She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Keene State College and a Masters of Education in Administration, Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Vermont
