Classroom Spotlight: Advanced Placement/Art Portfolio Classes
Selections from the students of Rutland High School’s Advanced Placement/ Art Portfolio class. Fred Lower, instructor.
This rigorous program provides the serious art student with the opportunity to prepare a portfolio of artwork with an emphasis on drawing. Students are encouraged to observe and draw from nature a variety of subjects, including the life model. The “presentation of artwork” is also an important part of a portfolio class. This includes sharing and discussing work with other students, interviewing for college and the experience of preparing an exhibition.
Drawing is a discipline and a language of learning to see forms in space and articulate them as expressive forms. Regardless whether or not the student chooses to pursue the study of art in college, he or she will carry skills that can be used throughout life as a means of communication of ideas.
