Class of ‘59 Back in School
Roy Carpenter (pictured above) with the new bench donated by RHS Class of ‘59.
His class voted to donate the bench recently, at their 50-year class reunion. The proposal was put to a committee of ‘59 graduates, whose response to the proposal was, according to committee member Roy Carpenter, “Overwhelmingly, ‘yes’”.
Mr. Carpenter was present for the arrival of the bench on November 18. The ‘59 alumni raised over $18,000 to purchase the bench for the school. This donation comes in addition to an already generous scholarship fund provided by the class of ‘59 for select RHS students.
Roy spoke of many fond memories from his days in the Rutland school system, and also of the legacy he saw other classes leave behind at RHS. ”Seeing the other benches in the lobby was what got me thinking,” he said. ”I wanted my class to leave a similar physical presence on the campus.”
The beautiful Verde Antique marble bench, which resides outside the main office, does just that. Mr. Carpenter likes that his class bench has a unique look and feel, from its lustrous green hue to its sleek curvature.
Roy said that he hopes students will enjoy the new bench. He looked at the bench proudy and said, “This has permanency”.
