Transformation of Instruction Using Technology
Welcome to our District Wide Technology In-service. We are excited about the variety of topics covered and believe there is something for everyone! We appreciate your interest and enthusiasm for technology and hope you enjoy the day. Please make sure that you thank the presenters and complete an online evaluation. Goalview - Ellie McGarry – 8:00 a.m. - Location: RHS Classroom White 15. The Goalview presentation will include a demonstration and overview of the district special education data management program. The main focus of the presentation will be a discussion on completing the Functional Behavioral Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan.

Intro to SMARTBoards – Dawn Adams – 8:00 a.m. – Location: RHS Classroom Science Lab 7. An introduction to SMARTboards and the notebook software with a focus on new learning or just a great refresher!

Intro to MS Office 2007 – Jack Clay – 8:00 a.m. - Location: RHS Classroom White 11 (Computer Lab). Microsoft Office 2003 was replaced with Office 2007, which uses a new paradigm, and now Office 2010 is on the horizon. Using a hands-on approach, this workshop introduces attendees to the new user interface of Microsoft’s ubiquitous Office software, and covers some new features of the Word and Excel applications.

Multimedia – Video Projects – Will Costello – 8:00 a.m.— Location: RHS Classroom Red 29 (Computer Lab). Learn to use video editing software in this hands on session. Feel free to bring your own video!
Multimedia – Photo Editing – Will Costello – 10:00 a.m.— Try your hand at photo editing in this hands on session. Bring your own photos if you like!
Google Applications – Bjorn Behrendt – 8:00 a.m. – Location: RHS Info Center (Library). Google Applications is a powerful set of programs with many different applications. This session will cover how to create a digital form and then have an open discussion on to its possible uses in the classroom. It will also cover Google Sites, and Presentation/Prezi.
- Sites is the Google version of a combined wiki and blog or collaborative web site. We will learn how to create a simple site, with a section for news as well as for links. Participants will discuss how this can be used by the teacher as their classroom website as well as with students to build collaborative projects.
- Google Presentation has the potential to be used for classroom assignments. In this session I will show some examples of web-based presentation tools a student can use as an alternative to PowerPoint. We will be looking at Google Presentation and Prezi which takes presentation beyond just a slide show.

Web 2.0 – Susan Renard – 8:00 a.m. –Location: RHS Classroom White 13
This workshop will cover various topics on Web 2.0 tools in education.
Topics will include the use of Web 2.0 tools in the classroom:
- what they are used for
- the ups and downs
- means for mitigating the downs

Autism Pro- Workshop for Regular Educators – 8:00 a.m. – Location: RHS White Classroom 12. Come and gain access to your very own AutismPro Workshops account. Learn to navigate the online professional development web site and gain access to dozens of workshops and associated resources on autism best practices from the latest research, including ABA, drawn from some of the world’s leading experts. Walk away with an account of your own that you can access anytime – anywhere over the internet.
Who should attend: This session is designed for teachers and support staff who currently work with or who are expected to work with students with autism in the near future.
Autism Pro – Professional -10:00 a.m. – Come together to refresh your knowledge, discuss utilization, focus on collaboration, and learn how to incorporate AutismPro Professional into your daily educational programming efforts. This workshop will also act as a focus group for Rutland users – please bring your thoughts and feedback to this session.
Who should attend: This workshop is for current AutismPro Professional users only.
Advanced SMARTBoards – Katie Duggan – 8:00 a.m. - Location: RHS Classroom White 18. This workshop will focus on getting the kids up and moving, self assessment and group assessment, as well as understanding the pedagogy behind the interactive white board and its use in the classroom.

21st Century Science Classroom Practices – Chad Hodgkins- 8:00 a.m. – Location: RHS Classroom Science Lab 5. This session demonstrates how a teacher can use technology for communication, collaboration, and inquiry and data analysis in the math and science classrooms. You will walk away with an understanding of how students can:
- Conduct collection and graphical analysis with hand-held computers
- Collect data using sensors and probes
- Incorporate multiple representations of knowledge in science and math curricula
- Participate in online homework services
21st Century Science Classroom Practices – Chad Hodgkins- 10:00 a.m. – same as 8:00 a.m. session
Aimsweb for Grade 3 – 8 Educators – Rich Reid – 8:00 a.m. Location: Stafford Tech Center Classroom 202. Aimsweb is a web-based tool that supports teachers in the identification of students at risk for academic challenges. In addition, it provides a vehicle for graphically representing our students’ response to our instruction and academic interventions. This overview will:
- Familiarize teachers with the properties of curriculum-based measurements;
- Expose participants to the various components of the Aimsweb tool;
- Illustrate how Aimsweb can be used to inform student instruction; and
- Illustrate how Aimsweb can be used to monitor student academic progress
Participants will be provided Aimsweb accounts to allow them to log on and explore the site along with the session facilitator.

Wordpress Media Management- David Townsend, Small Planet Inc. – 8:00 a.m. - Location: Stafford Tech Classroom 204. Learn how to create image galleries in using the NextGen gallery tool, insert images, sound files, video and slide shows in your Word Press posts and pages. This will be a hands-on session so bring media to work with on a thumb drive, CD or DVD.

Infinite Campus for Teachers – Kevin Browne – 8:00 a.m. - Location: Stafford Tech Classroom 206-08. Your Questions Answered! This class will help those who are still struggling with or have questions concerning Infinite Campus. You will look at your own data and receive individual help answering your questions.

Music Notation Software- Jason Anderson – 8:00 a.m. – Location: RMS Music Room. This hands on session will allow the user to explore notation software, and discover how this software combined with a SMARTboard gets kids out of their seats while learning music composition.

Kidspiration/Inspire Data – Jack Adams – 8:00 a.m. – Location: RMS Classroom 106 (Computer Lab). Inspiration, and the elementary version, Kidspiration, are graphic organizer programs that allow teachers and students to brainstorm and organize information and ideas in engaging and easy ways. Useful in any content area, these programs can help develop analytical skills by creating idea web diagrams or outlines at the same time. A great tool for note-taking, brainstorming, or organizing topics of a discussion.
Inspire Data is a terrific tool for data gathering and analysis. Can be used at any grade level in any content area. Create a new data base or use on of the existing files to organize data and then create a variety of visual representation to analyze the data. Strengthen those weak areas identified in NECAP math testing.
This presentation will provide instruction in how to use the application, time to experiment, and examples of lesson ideas to use in your classroom. First session will use Kidspiration, second session will use Inspiration, both sessions will explore Inspire Data.

Nings – Ron Eisenman- 8:00 a.m. – Location: RMS Classroom 104. This workshop will explore potential uses of pbworks and Ning sites in your classroom. I will present various models for integrating this technology into your curriculum. We will brainstorm project ideas for collaborative educational projects with students in China using the new GRASP Ning site. Participants will then create their own site tailored to their own classroom needs.

Using Google Tools to Implement Classroom Strategies – Lucie deLaBruere- 8:00 a.m. - Location: RMS Classroom 102. Using Google Tools to support strategies that increase student achievement as outlined by Marzano, Debra Pickering, and Jane Pollock in “Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement”. This will be a HANDS on (but not a HOW TO) session that uses Google docs, spreadsheets, and presentations. Basic understanding of Google Tools helpful (but not necessary). You will be actively participating in activities designed to model the tools in use (not a how to tutorial).

VT 2020: Transforming Classrooms – Charlie Wilson- 8:00 a.m. - Location: RIS Classroom 205. Investigate strategies that develop in a transforming classroom. The roles of the teacher, students and parents are changing. Take a look inside a transforming classroom and see what teachers, students and parents are doing. Learn what is happening around the state to support technology integration. How does communication change? How are students collaborating with teachers after school hours? What does “24/7/365” really mean? How do you manage the students and their learning? How do blogs, wikis, and collaboration tools help a project-based classroom transform?

Using SMARTBoards and Document Cameras in Primary Classrooms – Cathy O’Rourke- 8:00 a.m. Location: RIS Classroom 206. In this workshop you will see easy and practical ways to integrate technology into your daily classroom activities using your SMARTboard and document camera and Notebook 10 software. We will also explore ways to create engaging interactive lessons for your students using the resources you have saved over the years and using electronic resources that come with your instructional materials. Download resources you can use in your classroom now.

SMART Response (Senteo) Clicker System for Grades K-6 – Marianne Bees – 8:00 a.m. - Location: RMS Classroom 210 (Computer Lab). If you are interested in learning about a powerful assessment tool, please come to this workshop! The tests are easy to make and are an effective time-saver for the classroom. If you use a SmartBoard, then you should learn how to use these clickers too! In each workshop, the following will be covered:
- Using Senteo clickers to take a test
- Learning the Senteo software (adding your class lists, analyzing data, exporting results)
- How to make a test
- Troubleshooting tips
- Resources to find pre-made quizzes
- Importing quizzes from SynchronEyes
- Making your own assessments
